CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Treason
The elevator to Bobâs apartment pinged, and the doors slid open. Ben found his dad pacing along the kitchen counter with a plastic water bottle in his hand.
âBen!â he said with some surprise as if he hadnât been expecting him. He stepped forward, but his face fell as soon as Mesmo exited the elevator. Bob licked his lips and drew back.
Ben decided to ignore his fatherâs unwelcome reaction to the alien but felt reluctant to enter the apartment further. His parentsâ lie loomed like an insurmountable wall before him. âI need to talk to you,â he said in a dull voice.
Bob placed the bottle on the counter, then pulled at his collar. âYes, I need to talk to you, too.â His eyes were fixed on Mesmo while avoiding Bensâ.
âThereâs no need. I already know the truth,â Ben said glumly. âYouâre my dad. Mom told me.â The words sounded foreign to his ears.
Bob cleared his throat. âI know, she called and told me what happened. Sheâs looking all over for you.â He rubbed at the middle of his forehead with his eyes closed. âLook, she made me promise not to say anything. It wasnât supposed to happen this way. We were going to go out, the three of us, have a nice dinner, then talk about itâtogether. But then, this happened.â He made a gesture that seemed aimed at Mesmo.
Frustration surged within Ben.
Whyâs he on Mesmoâs back?
Bobâs eyes darted across the apartment. He waved the boy over. âCan you come on over here?â he said.
Ben and Mesmo took a step forward.
âNot you,â Bob snapped at Mesmo.
Heat flushed through Benâs body. âWill you stop that? Mesmoâs my friend. He came to help.â
âJust, come on over here, squirt!â Bob demanded irritably, his voice calling for obedience.
Ben approached him, a little apprehensive. He noticed small pearls of sweat on Bobâs forehead.
Whatâs up with him?
A reflection on the kitchen fridge moved, making him spin towards the living room. But too late.
From behind a wall, Connelly stepped out with a gun in his hand.
Ben yelped, shrinking into Bob in fright.
âSh! Itâs ok! This is a police officer,â Bob said, wrapping his arm around the boyâs chest.
âNo, wait!â Ben shouted, struggling to free himself from Bobâs restraining grip.
âCalm down!â Bob urged. âHeâs here to protect us.â
âAre you crazy?â
âListen to me!â Bob insisted as Ben squirmed. âThis Mesmo is a dangerous felon. The police have been chasing him all across the country.â
âSo you went and called them?â Ben shouted in disbelief, lunging from Bobâs grasp and whirling to face him.
âRelax, will you? I recognized this criminal the minute I laid eyes on him in the park. You canât hang out with people like that! Trust me, I know what Iâm talking about. Theyâre dangerous!â
Ben was on the verge of a breakdown. âYou have no idea what you did!â His skin crawled at the shapeshifterâs proximity. âHeâs going to kill us!â
âDonât be stupid. Let the man do his joâ¦â
Connelly bellowed, âThatâs enough!â
Ben whimpered.
The shapeshifter hadnât taken his eyes off of Mesmo for a second.
